What is a Young Carer?

Carers Australia has defined a Young Carer as someone who is under the age of 25 who has been put into the position of caring for a parent or sibling with a chronic illness, mental illness, disability or drug/alcohol addiction.

Young Carers might help out around the house with cooking, cleaning, shopping, personal care tasks for a parent or sibling, helping with medications, managing the family finances, paying the bills, helping take care of other people in the family, emotional support and just making sure that everyone is ok.

Sometimes it can be hard to be a Young Carer

A lot of Young Carers are very proud of their caring role however sometimes it can effect when they get to hang out with friends, their school work, having jobs and how they feel. Sometimes Young Carers need help for themselves to manage being a young person and their caring role.
